[If] full attention was given to
outer objects, these frequently
seemed to be in normal
position, and whatever there
was of abnormality seemed to
lie in myself, as if head and
shoulders were inverted and I
were viewing objects from that
position, as boys sometimes do
from between their legs. At
other times the inversion
seemed confined to the face or
eyes alone.
Still another reason for the
confusion over StrattonΓÇÖs
findings is that his motor
performance clearly did
undergo successful adaptation.
At first, as we might expect, his
movements toward visible
objects were inappropriate. He
reached for an object on the
left when it was in fact on the
right. But he soon learned to
correct for these errors and, in
time, such correction became
automatic, although
occasionally errors recurred.
Others who have repeated this
kind of experiment over longer
time periods have learned to
negotiate the environment so
successfully that they have
even been able to ride a bicycle
or ski.
